About Andy, founder & architectural designer

I have recently moved near to Southwold, Suffolk, after 17 years of living in France. Here on Suffolk’s Heritage Coast, I am continuing my work on architectural design projects (both interior and exterior), planning applications, and technical drawings for the renovation and extension of existing properties and for new build. I have close ties with various professionals in design and construction and I work well on my own or in a team to realise my client's dreams. I’d like to tell you a bit about my background before my recent arrival in Suffolk. I qualified in 1984 with a BA Hons in Furniture and Related Product Design which combined creative design with ergonomic, and usable form. I soon entered the dynamic world of exhibition design where I worked during the 1980s and 1990s. Many of the projects I worked on cost over a million pounds some stands were complex encompassing all areas of design – artistic, technical, bespoke furniture design, graphic design, intricate lighting, and bespoke air-conditioning plans. It was the perfect learning ground for a young designer. After seven years I became interested in the renovation of houses and I took a year out to become an apprentice with a master builder to learn practical building skills. I became very skilled in tiling, plastering, painting and carpentry. Combining this and my design experience I set up a company (1991 to 2006), offering building and architectural design to clients. I specialised in renovation, interior design, and submitting planning applications. I then took a year out to go explore India, southeast Asia, Australasia, and Africa. I also worked in Kenya for two months at a high-end interior design studio on commercial projects. My travels had a profound effect on me and enriched my design creativity. After moving to the French Alps in 2006, my wife and I purchased a 450m² derelict alpine barn which I renovated and converted into a 450m² five-star ski chalet. In 2008 I created a building and design company and as the size and complexity of my client projects increased for both renovation and new build, I had the idea in 2016 to establish an architect's practice. I partnered with an architect in 2017 and we registered our company with the Ordre des Architects and commenced work. And I loved it. Some of the projects you’ll see in my portfolio were produced by me whilst I was a co-partner in that company, AlpStudio, and these are marked with an asterisk. Others were produced in collaboration that I had with other local architects previously. The architect I partnered with did not speak French thus I presented all our designs to the local authorities and worked closely with the planning departments. I also briefed local specialists in construction, geological and topographical surveys, and structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering. I have solid experience in buildings as well as architectural design and planning, and I’d love to help you achieve your vision for your home, wherever it is. I hope to hear from you.
