2016 to 2017 : design, planning application (approved)
As part of a three-chalet development the brief for this chalet was for a comfortable family home of approximately 230m² habitable space. It was destined to be sold and whilst it was not as luxurious other two chalets in the development, it was very well appointed and spacious. The plot was not large for a chalet of that size which limited the potential so the design had to have three levels but if all were above ground it would be too high to comply with the planning regulations, and it would not look good proportionally in any case. So, this was the first challenge. I needed to see how to use the ground and the slope to our advantage to fit in the accommodation and the garaging. I assessed all the spaces required and considered which needed natural light, and how much, and spaces that needed none. The cinema room, games room, wine cellar and laundry room were prime candidates for being underground, so my design buried the basement level on three sides with a small amount of glazing on one side to give light and external access to, primarily, the games room. The ground floor consisted of a wc and a large open plan kitchen, dining, and living area that led to an outside terrace. The top floor housed two ensuite double bedrooms and a family suite with two bedrooms and one bathroom within it. All bedrooms had private balconies. There was a large double garage with separate ski and bike room, all underground, plus parking for two cars. Outside terracing all around included a flat roof terrace over garage and ski room.
